SEARICA Online Conference-Fisheries and Aquaculture in the Danube and the Black Sea region: views for building forward better

To discuss how fisheries and aquaculture in the Danube and Black Sea region were affected by the Covid-19 crisis and how to build forward better; Seas, Rivers, Islands and Coastal Areas Intergroup organized an online webinar on 22nd of April 2021.

Hosted by MEP Carmen AVRAM, SEArica Vice-Chair responsible for the Danube and the Black Sea, and co-organised by the Balkan and Black Sea Commission of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe (CPMR BBSC) and the International Centre for Black Sea Studies (ICBSS), the online conference took place with a great turnout.

Black Sea CONNECT Coordinator Prof. Barış Salihoğlu joined the discussions to address challenges and opportunities regarding the fisheries and aquaculture sectors in the Black Sea. In the webinar, Prof. Salihoğlu has emphasized the fact that the Black Sea ecosystem is susceptible to increasingly negative impacts of global climate change and multiple natural and human-induced stressors such as eutrophication, hypoxia, overfishing, and invasive species. Salihoglu concluded by stating that generating knowledge is necessary to assess and mitigate these stressors.
